About the Materials and Finishes

The strength of Enclume products begins with the materials they use, such as high carbon steel, or hand-selected Eastern maple. Their racks and hooks are forged up to twice as thick as their closest competitor. The flat bar steel they use is ideally-suited for the transformation they accomplish to reveal the rich, distressed patina look of their signature hammered steel finish. A protective coating is also applied to help keep maintenance to a minimum.

Enclume also pioneered shaping stainless steel into cookware racks and related products. Today the process for brushing their stainless bar to a uniform satin finish has improved to near perfection. Stainless steel is a generic term for a family of low carbon alloy steels containing 10.5% or more chromium. It has a self-healing property because of its specific chemical composition. For this reason stainless steel does not require any coating or other corrosion protection to remain bright and shiny even after decades of use.

Finally we come to the jewel-like electro-plated products. Whether copper, chrome or brass –the key is top quality cold-rolled steel. They buy this level of material because it alone can be processed to accept the type of plating that is hand-polished to an unblemished, stunning mirror finish. The copper racks are electro-plated with two layers of copper and the brass and chrome racks are electro-plated with a layer of copper and a layer of nickel before the brass or chrome is applied. In comparing solid brass or solid copper to our electro-plated finishes, they do not come close to the strength, maintenance and durability standards demonstrated by Enclume electro-plated racks.

Chrome and stainless steel are considered low maintenance along with hammered steel. The copper and brass electro-plated finishes are not lacquered so over time they will develop a patina. They can remain bright with regular polishing using a non-abrasive cleaner but be sure that all trace of cleaner is removed or the finish will tarnish again immediately.
